Movie Review: The Mist
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007I escaped this past weeked, err, I mean - I was able to have a nice night out this past weekend with my best friend, whom also was escaping the evil clutches his own newborn twins… We ventured out for dinner and a movie, and after a terrific Mexican Fiesta, we went to see Stephen King’s The Mist, starring the Punisher, Tom Jane.
I had read the book ages ago, and was looking forward to seeing a movie that I knew my wife would never agree to see - well not unless it meant me viewing 6 chick flicks in return anyway. The movie was actually quite well done, spooky, nice effects (save for the first scene in the loading dock, I have seen better effects on you tube) and in general the pacing was great. It was a great buildup, and the religious spin that Marcia Gay Harden’s character set forth, really drove the story for me - it was over the top, but easily plausible.
The let down here, and the reason I’m recommending people to wait for the DVD, is ending. Trust me, whne you are watching this, once you start to hear the creepy Choir music, just stop the movie. You’ll still have enjoyed it - and maybe even like the idea of an open ending. But if you do go on, you are going to get an ending that Stephen King himself says:
“…is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last five minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead.”
Shocking? Yep. Better than the original? Nope.
I tend to always side with the master of horror, I adore the man’s work. I am a bonafide Dark Tower Junkie… But I do think that King’s original ending here was much more satisfying. Not going to spoil it for you though - the thought that King may hex me scares me enough…
