Movie Review: The Mist

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I escaped this past weeked, err, I mean - I was able to have a nice night out this past weekend with my best friend, whom also was escaping the evil clutches his own newborn twins… We ventured out for dinner and a movie, and after a terrific Mexican Fiesta, we went to see Stephen King’s The Mist, starring the Punisher, Tom Jane.

I had read the book ages ago, and was looking forward to seeing a movie that I knew my wife would never agree to see - well not unless it meant me viewing 6 chick flicks in return anyway. The movie was actually quite well done, spooky, nice effects (save for the first scene in the loading dock, I have seen better effects on you tube) and in general the pacing was great. It was a great buildup, and the religious spin that Marcia Gay Harden’s character set forth, really drove the story for me - it was over the top, but easily plausible.

The let down here, and the reason I’m recommending people to wait for the DVD, is ending. Trust me, whne you are watching this, once you start to hear the creepy Choir music, just stop the movie. You’ll still have enjoyed it - and maybe even like the idea of an open ending. But if you do go on, you are going to get an ending that Stephen King himself says:

“…is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last five minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead.”

Shocking? Yep. Better than the original? Nope.

I tend to always side with the master of horror, I adore the man’s work. I am a bonafide Dark Tower Junkie… But I do think that King’s original ending here was much more satisfying. Not going to spoil it for you though - the thought that King may hex me scares me enough…

Abby at school

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Most kids hate school. They want nothing to do with it. Not our kid…

Abby loves going to school and has done very well considering she is the youngest one in her class. Kristen and I met with her teach, Mrs Smulligan, this morning and she had nothing but good things to say about Abby. She is progressing well, playing well with the other kids, and just being a great student who is listening and learning.

And here I figured she’d be kicked out by week 3 for trying to steal everyone’s snacks!

Abby’s First School Photo

Looking at her first school photo I cannot help but wonder - why can’t she sit still like that for me?! (sic)

Thanksgiving

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Well we have a lot to be thankful for this year… The twins are thankfully doing great, no signs of preemie in these guys!

We spent Thanksgiving with our extended family in Woburn, Mary and Mac were very gracious in inviting the 5 of us to dinner and we had a wonderful time, lots of food, lots of fun and even a sneak of a nap for yours truly!

Mom and Dad had company down in the white pants state (Florida for the un-informed). My aunt Maria and Uncle Jimmy came down from Lynn and My uncle Kenny visited as well. From what I heard that had a grand old time!

Now upon us is teh favorite season of all, Christmas. And Krsiten sure knows how to start the season with a bang - 12 hours of shopping! That’s right my wife and her sister trekked out at 4am on Black Friday! give them a round of applause! ‘Cause this boy would NEVER do that, not if they were offering free 52 inch TV’s –well… maybe.
